Age UK was formed on April 1, 2009, through the merger of Age Concern England and Help the Aged, with the new brand officially launching in April 2010. Following the merger, Age UK retained ownership of the "Age Concern" name, requiring local, independent Age Concern branches to enter into brand licensing agreements if they wished to use the new Age UK branding, or to continue operating under the old name.
History of the Name and Licensing Establishment of "Age Concern": In 1971, the National Old People’s Welfare Committee (NOPWC) changed its public name to Age Concern and separated from the government.
Licensing & Federation: Many local Age Concern groups used the name under license from the national organisation for decades. A formal federation of Age Concern organisations was established in June 2000. Merger and Rebranding (2009-2010): Age Concern England and Help the Aged merged on April 1, 2009, to form a new charity, which was later rebranded as Age UK. Ownership of the Name: Following the merger, the new national entity (Age UK) retained ownership of the "Age Concern" trademark.
Brand Partnership Agreements: Local Age Concerns were invited to become brand partners of Age UK. Those that did rebranded as "Age UK [Location]". Those that chose to remain independent were required to enter a brand licensing agreement if they wanted to continue using the "Age Concern" branding, leading to legal and commercial restrictions for some groups.
Independence and Relationships Local Autonomy: Many local Age Concern groups remained legally independent of the national Age UK charity. Brand Confusion: Some local Age Concerns reported that the new branding created confusion, with some users believing local groups were part of the national Age UK, despite being independent.
Brand Split: Approximately half of the 300+ local Age Concerns became brand partners (Age UK) while about half became "Friends of Age UK," keeping their original local name.
Recent Developments In 2024, some independent local charities, such as Age Concern Central Lancashire, rebranded (e.g., to "Regenerage") to escape the restrictions of the brand licensing agreement with Age UK. Other groups continue to operate as "Age Concern [Location]" independently, while others are fully branded partners as "Age UK [Location]".
